Cannon's Real School Garden: 26 Days and Counting!!!

Last year, the staff of Cannon Elementary began laying the groundwork for a 'REAL School Garden'. RSGs works together with the school community to create learning gardens in schools. Additionally, RSGs trains teachers in how to use the gardens to improve student engagement and achievement.

The entire staff was invited the share their vision of the ideal garden. This feedback became part of our application. As a result of this application, Cannon was selected as a finalist and representatives from RSGs came to Cannon for a formal interview with administrators, teachers, scholars and parents. In May we learned that we were selected as recipients for a RSG. Thanks to VERY generous funding and support from the Mercedes Benz Company, we are now moving forward to make this dream garden a reality!
The initial design for the garden has been completed and the infrastructure is underway. It will not be long before the space behind the school is completely transformed.

The 'Big Dig' is scheduled for Friday, September 25th and all members of the Cannon community are invited and encouraged to attend and lend a hand.

I am so excited about the potential learning opportunities and life skills this outdoor classroom holds for Cannon scholars. In addition, I think the garden will promote the sense of school pride and promote happier and healthier children! Stay tuned for pictures and follow-up stories!

Dot Day
International Dot Day is coming up really soon...September 15th! This special day is centered around the book, The Dot, by Peter Reynolds, a fable about the creative spirit in all of us.

We will share this book together then create dot inspired products to share as we connect with another first grade class.

Global Read Aloud
Global Read aloud is celebrated from October 5 - November 13. During this time frame, we will study the author Amy Krouse Rosenthal and her literature. As we investigate her books, we will connect and learn with other classes around the globe who are doing the same. Some of Amy's books include...

Mystery Reader
Mystery Reader is project that I developed to allow scholars and family members to connect during the school day, through Skype. Family volunteers (grandparents, aunts, uncles...) are scheduled throughout the year to read their favorite picture book to the class through Skype. This project has been a huge success in the past. The Mystery Reader is always a surprise and scholars never know whose 'person' is going to show up on the screen. We've had readers from all over the United States. This program also gives distant family members an opportunity to to be part of our classroom. Follow this link to see how Mystery Reader looks!

These are just a few of the reading adventures we have planned for this year. Stay tuned for more ADVENTURES IN READING!
